Description

* * The Bronze Cranes from this sculpture received the 2013 Artists For Conservation Foundation “Award of Excellence”, an honor only given to 5 artists worldwide per year.

“The Winds of Change” began as a nationwide call for proposals for a new Visitor Center monument at the Indiana Goose Pond State Fish and Wildlife area.

The return of what had been marginal agricultural land back to prime wetland habitat has been phenomenal, now hosting a migration stopover for thousands of migrating sandhill cranes, endangered whooping cranes, American white pelicans, Canada geese, and a myriad of other waterfowl and shorebird species, and even endangered whooping cranes!

Living in Indiana at the time (and having childhood ties to the state), I was anxious to be part of a project that began with such far reaching conservation goals. I contacted my friend, artist Sharon Fullingim from New Mexico, who works in Indiana Limestone, and asked if she would like to partner with me on the proposal. I designed the sandhill cranes for the proposal, and Sharon created the Indiana limestone bas relief base. We submitted our proposal, and were very proud to have been selected for this project!  The title, “The Winds of Change”, was so appropriate for the changes going on in this fertile marshland!

(Now released as a limited edition, these birds are available individually, as a pair, or as a complete monument. Cranes are approximately 2/3 life size.)
