In the Sonoran desert of the US, western screech owls are just one species who frequently use saguaro cactus holes for shelter from desert heat and cold.  Not able to excavate their own cavities, these owls, and many other species such as elf owls, kestrels, purple martins, house finches, flycatchers, wrens, and sparrows, must depend on the woodpeckers of the desert region (Gila woodpeckers, gilded and red-shafted flickers) to create these armored shelters.

* * “Desert Denizen” received the America’s Parks II- Through the Beauty of Art 2013 Honorable Mention Award, one of three awards presented to Eva Stanley at this show.
